The Silent Eye (working title)
is a long-term project I began in 2007. It was first inspired when I noticed a tourist standing on a seat opposite the Sydney Opera House, awkwardly positioning themselves with a compact digital camera, trying to capture what we now call a “selfie.” Fascinated, I started observing others and the curious contortions people would adopt to frame the perfect shot of themselves or their companions.

From compact cameras to the earliest mobile phones, and now to the most advanced smartphones, I’ve spent years documenting this cultural shift—capturing fleeting, often humorous, moments in public spaces. The Silent Eye brings together these images in a self-published coffee table book, offering a visual record of the selfie’s evolution and a reflection on how we see ourselves in the modern world.
